![]() De La Rosa does have issues walking batters in his career, but it should be noted he was pitching to the aforementioned Castillo who is a terrible pitch framer.Īssuming the stem cell therapy will work, and further assuming De La Rosa is ready by Opening Day, the 27-year old needs a team who will help him harness his stuff and a catching staff that will help him get those borderline pitches. When he is healthy, De La Rosa has a live arm with him throwing a mid to high 90s fastball with a curve and slider who has shown some flashes of dominance. For what it is worth, Bartolo Colon used the stem cell therapy back in 2010, and he was able to revive his major league career. At the moment, he has been trying to use stem cell treatment as a means to circumvent the surgery. The reason De La Rosa was non-tendered was because there remains a real possibility he needs a second Tommy John surgery. While Welington Castillo got most of the publicity, De La Rosa was another surprise non-tender by the Arizona Diamondbacks. With that in mind, here are some available free agent pitchers who could serve in that role:Ģ016 Stats: 4-5, 4.26 ERA, 13 G, 10 GS, 50.2 IP, 1.243 WHIP, 9.6 K/9 Ultimately, the Mets are looking for someone to reprise the role that Bartolo Colon was slated to serve during the 2016 season. With that, it is likely the Mets are going to need to look outside the organization for a pitcher who is willing to start the year as a fifth starter, but is willing to transition to the bullpen as the year progresses. Pitchers like Sean Gilmartin and Gabriel Ynoa did not show the Mets enough in 2016 to prove they can be relied upon to make more than one or two spot starts. It is a large reason why the Mets have at least discussed the possibility of putting Wheeler in the bullpen to start the season. However, after missing two straight seasons due to Tommy John surgery, the Mets would be hard pressed to rely upon him to provide anything during the 2017 season. Naturally, the hope is that Zack Wheeler could be the fifth starter at some point during the season. That reverts back to the issue created by Harvey, deGrom, and Matz that the Mets need another arm to eat up some innings. However, both pitchers are likely going to be on innings limits, which would prevent them from pitching the entire 2017 season unless the team skips a couple of their starts. Both pitchers showed enough to prove they deserve the job out of Spring Training. If the season was going to begin today, the fifth starter would be determined by a competition between Seth Lugo and Robert Gsellman. The Mets need someone to fill-in for those starts and eat up some innings.Īdditionally, the team needs a fifth starter. Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom, and Steven Matz are coming off season ending surgeries, and the Mets most likely don’t want them making over 30 starts and/or going over 200 innings.

So, does it make sense to get an additional Kindle Unlimited subscription? Reading can be an expensive hobby, and although e-books are conventionally cheaper than the average paperback or hardcover, they are still pricey. It's not just limited to the Kindle either - the service can be used on nearly all internet-connected devices including the Kindle desktop, mobile, and web apps. In addition, the plan includes three magazine subscriptions that can automatically be delivered to a Kindle when new issues are released. Users can access up to 20 e-books at a time with the plan, and 'return' finished e-books in order to gain access to new titles. The Kindle Unlimited plan offers access to over two million e-books available on Amazon for its price. The Kindle Unlimited plan is a monthly, $9.99 subscription that can be canceled at any time. New users have the option to either test the service out for a free month or pay $4.99 for the first two months. Instead, it serves as a standalone service that provides a much bigger catalog than the Prime Reading titles that are included with Amazon Prime. I wanted to learn how to transform things, to turn nothingness of raw earth into something beautiful. The sun shone against your crinkled skin, and you huffed in exertion every time you moved, but you yanked weeds and overturned soil with an unparalleled vigor. I remember coming home from school to find you nestled deeply in a blanket of wet soil, always wearing a collared shirt with swirling patterns of roses and peonies, the kind that many Chinese grandmothers have. When you lived with us, you were often alone, and you would spend those empty hours transforming our garden. I wanted to be independent and strong like you were. I wanted to be proud and brave like you were. It amazed me how you crossed boundaries like this, and there were so many things I wanted to learn from you. “Purple and yellow, lucky colors,” you often reminded me. ![]() “They’re beautiful,” I would reassure you. Two beautiful roses that you gardened with such care and asked me often how pretty they were. I was only thirteen at the time, but something about that fascinated me - how you were able to walk into a space so out of reach, unreligious, non-native, and speaking no words of English, to procure two beautiful things. I didn’t want to ask how you were able to communicate with him, but you seemed to know what was on my mind. They were replanting and would have thrown them away. When I asked where you’d gotten them, you told me that the gardener at the church had given them to you. I remember one afternoon, you came home clutching two pots of roses, purple and yellow. You used to frequent a Mormon church right by our house where there were rows of white fountains and thick gardens. Walking quickly around our small neighborhood in West LA, using your knuckles to gently stretch and ease your muscles, you would make long loops around our home. I remember there was one day when you were on one of your routines doing morning exercises. I lost more than just the language - I lost the sweet taste of Mandarin on my tongue, the silly Chinese songs you used to sing to me, and the rich accents and tones that make Chinese so beautiful.īut I didn’t lose you, and I didn’t lose the many lessons you taught me unknowingly. I used to tell my friends this, proudly too, but I lost the language, and it became an injustice to claim that title. My mother told me once that Chinese was my first language. I simply responded with “对,” and I convinced myself that it was because my Chinese was not good. You asked me many questions, but I never did the same for you. You often laughed at my Chinese, and teased me for only responding with “对.” “Yes.” “Correct.” It was a dismissive word. I lived for many years without ever thinking about how you were doing or what you were feeling - the barrier between us seemed too immense, a wall built from bricks of broken Mandarin, cement layers of faulty internet connection, and your strong Wúxī accent that not even the younger Chinese generation can understand anymore. Perhaps I would have treated you better, or at the very least, I would have remembered you. You never had a birth certificate, papers lost in the aftermath of revolution, and just the mere thought of age renders you silent and forlorn. You’re almost ninety now, although none of us are quite sure exactly how old you are. And perhaps now that’s why it is so difficult for me to accept your weakness. ![]() You gripped me firmly, and as a child, it reminded me of just how strong you were, despite your age. That’s how you’d often lead me, whether we were gardening together or taking a walk while you did morning exercises, you would always hurry me along, one hand wrapped tightly around my wrist. And though your hands are much rougher, crinkled like parchment paper, the gesture always sends my mind tumbling through our memories together, most of which we made when I was twelve years old, and when you lived with my family in America. It’s been so long since you were last in America, but every time someone grabs my wrist, I’m reminded of you. I thought that of our memories too: thick and comforting, but they were clumped as well, honey riddled with dry chunks of misunderstanding and silence. They were rich and floral and tasted so much of home. You left only a few jars before you went back to Nanjing seven years ago, but I still remember their taste. Those memories I have of you are sweet, sweet like the osmanthus honey you used to make me, petals hand picked from your cobblestone patio back in China. ![]() Yep, I can even simulate a phone network to test old POTS phone equipment. So, I needed a place to work that’s not in the house.Īlmost 20 years ago my wife and I moved into our current home. By the end of the week we were both cranky. So like many others, I went to work at the house.Īt the house, there was an issue. I started a new job in February 2020, and in early March, the new company moved the majority of the people out of the office. Oh well their loss. After over 20 years with the same company, I changed jobs. I often tried to convince him to make a Geochron part of our standard datacenter deployment configuration, but once it got to the bean-counters it was always shot down. When I first started the CEO/Founder had a Geochron in his office, but it was his personal unit. I spent the last 20 years building and maintaining a global time distribution hierarchy within the corporation (as a hobby that someone else funded if you will) but eventually ‘corporate’ caught on and it was adopted and taken over by enterprise IT. I have recently retired but in my ‘working life’ I was a Computer Systems Architect, but my passion has always been accurate time. (OK EST is boring, but being retired my life is now much less complicated.) From the top down of the stack we have EST, EST, GMT and EST. You can’t miss it, I just point when someone asks what time is it? I have five more of these units scattered around the house connected to IRIG-B by a coax that I have run to each display (what is the point of a time display it is not millisecond accurate…). The ‘TCD26’ photo is the time display in my basement office, it is synchronized to an XL-AK using IRIG-B. I have deployed all these units literally around the world. The two bottom units are TrueTime XL-AK GPS Time and Frequency Receivers (the oldest, but arguably the best). These were much more expensive than the MCR, hence why we moved to the MCR. The second unit is a Symmetricom S250i, IRIG-B synchronized Network Time Server. The top unit is a Masterclock MCR1000 Network Time Server (newest of the bunch), a ‘low cost’ unit of which I have deployed 100’s in the systems I used to design. The ‘rack’ photo is a part of my collection of time and frequency instruments. The ‘new_clock’ photo replaces the Raspberry Pi driving the screen with my new Geochron Digital Atlas 4K. To the left of the GC1000 is an active shortwave antenna control box this antenna facilitates such reliable reception. It has been maintained and upgraded many times over the years. I purchased it six months after introduction, a great expense at the time. The ‘GC1000’ photo is my oldest, and dearest, clock a Heathkit GC1000. And just to really expose my obsession there are several Masterclock TCD 26 time displays scattered throughout the house driven by one of the XL-AK GPS clocks providing IRIG-B. They are two TrueTime XL-AK’s, a Symmetricom S250i (IRIG synchronized) and a Masterclock MRC1000 time server. Not in this photo is a ‘rack’ of various GPS based time servers/clocks. The TL-3 runs ‘synchronized’ almost the entire day, even way out here on the New England coast. Yes they are still out there and running. The true Time Geeks may be able to identify it, it is a TrueTime TL-3 WWV shortwave radio clock. In the picture is a four time zone wall clock (also many years old), a kit built Nixie Tube clock (using IN 14 tubes) and in the lower center one of my most beloved clocks. We actually got rid of cable a few years ago and have never looked back. ![]() The only downside is a couple of shows we love (Burn Notice comes to mind) won’t let you watch online unless you sign in with you cable provider info…so we have to wait for a few things. I would say we watch a little less TV now and it has made us more deliberate with our choices. It isn’t that simple – I have to be more mindful of what I watch now. The only thing I miss is the mindless flipping through on a Sunday afternoon and finding a good movie you haven’t seen in ages (that happened twice a year?) and the sitting down for 20 minutes while I ate lunch and just flipping on HGTV or a morning talk show. The kids miss Disney and complain about that once in awhile but they can always find something to watch. ![]() We have Netflix streaming, Hulu+, and Amazon Prime for a total of less than $30 a month. I’m probably the one who misses it most but even I stopped complaining once we got Amazon Prime (I missed my cooking competition shows and House Hunters – Amazon has those). This just goes to show that everything you need to know you can learn from John Prine. Have you ditched cable and lived to tell about it? I want to hear your success stories – and what you did with all the money you saved! So now I’m trying to figure out alternatives – we already have a Roku, Netflix and Amazon Prime, but what else do we need? Hulu+? Apple TV? Is there such a thing as an antenna for local channels any more? I don’t know how much I thought it cost, but I sure didn’t think it was that much! So now I’m totally on the “It’s rotting their brains!!!” bandwagon because, come on, that is a lot of freaking money. I personally couldn’t have cared less if we have cable or not – that is, until I looked at our bank statement and saw how much we pay for it.
